Meet the Team

Laura Cessna, MS.Ed., joins South University as the University Director of Career Services and Alumni Relations. With over 20 years of experience in higher education administration, Laura is a pioneering workforce and community development leader. She has successfully launched interdisciplinary academic pathway programs, implemented workforce development models, and spearheaded organizational transformation initiatives in private and public institutions.

Laura brings a wealth of expertise in career services, alumni relations, student affairs, student services, and organizational leadership. Her unwavering commitment has always been cultivating a campus environment that delivers quality education, fosters academic excellence, and prepares students for successful careers after graduation.

As a dedicated advocate within our communities, Laura serves on multiple board committees and volunteers her time, passionately supporting and empowering behavioral health, residential, and rehabilitative services for individuals.

Laura’s career journey reflects her strong commitment to continuous learning and growth. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration, both from Kent State University.

Michelle “Molly” Keating is the Director of Career Services for South University’s Austin, Savannah, and High Point campuses. With a deep commitment to fostering career development, Molly dedicates herself to connecting driven students and graduates with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed in their careers. On campus, she actively engages with the professional community by bringing in recruiters to connect with students and facilitating workshops that provide essential interview practice and insights into current job trends.

Molly’s passion for career development is matched by her commitment to lifelong learning. She continues to expand her own knowledge and skills through volunteer work, serving as a Community Investment Volunteer with United Way of the Coastal Empire and as a Board Member and Professional Development Associate with IVolunteer International.

Monica Whitson, Ph. D., is the Director of Career Services at South University’s Montgomery, AL, and Columbia, SC campuses. She is dedicated to empowering students and alumni in their career development journeys. With a passion for career development and a keen understanding of industry trends, Monica Whitson plays a pivotal role in shaping the University’s career service programs and initiatives.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services Management from the University of Phoenix, Master of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Phoenix, Master of Science degree in Philosophy from Walden University, and earned her Ph.D. in Human and Social Services from Walden University. Her extensive background in career counseling, combined with her expertise in strategic planning and program management, enables her to provide invaluable guidance to students at every stage of their career exploration and job search.

Under Dr. Monica Whitson’s leadership, the Career Services department is introducing innovative workshops, networking events, and personalized coaching sessions that have significantly enhanced student engagement and success. Dr. Monica Whitson is known for her approachable demeanor and her ability to inspire and motivate individuals to reach their full potential. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), National Society of Leadership and Success, and the National Organization for Human Services.

Outside of her professional role, Dr. Monica Whitson enjoys mentoring young professionals, volunteering in community outreach programs, traveling, family time, reading, engaging in activities promoting professional development, and exploring new career development strategies. Her dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others reflects her unwavering belief in the power of purposeful career planning.

Althea Heron is the Director of Career Services for South University, Tampa, FL., Orlando, FL. and Virginia Beach, VA Campuses.  Althea earned her BA in Criminal Justice from Florida A & M University, establishing a solid academic foundation.  Althea brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her role, demonstrating a commitment to serving her students and graduates.

Althea’s journey began in the field of social services, where she played a vital role in assisting families in Broward County, Florida. Her dedication led her to positions as a Case Manager for both the Department of Children & Families and Forensic Mental Health Court, where she provided crucial case management services. These experiences shaped Althea’s understanding of community needs and the importance of fostering meaningful connections.

Althea has over 5+ years of experience in Career Services.  She served as a beacon for students seeking career development services. As the leader of the career center, she managed daily operations and implemented innovative solutions, preparing students with career readiness skills needed to assist them in landing their desired positions. Althea’s proactive approach extended to building strong relationships with employers, both regionally and nationally, resulting in valuable employment opportunities for graduates.

Now, as the Director of Career Services for South University, she considers it an honor to continue her fulfilling career.  Althea is deeply committed to assisting students on their career journeys, leveraging her expertise to apply career resources effectively. Her goal is to guide students towards successful and rewarding professional paths, contributing to their future success.  Althea Heron is not just a director, she is a passionate advocate for students, ready to make a positive impact on their lives and careers.

Crystal Dennis serves as the Director of Career Services at South University’s online division. Ms. Dennis has a diverse background which includes work in career services, workforce development, and radio communications. In addition to this, she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Entertainment Business and a Master of Science degree in Human Resources Management and is currently pursuing her Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership.

Ms. Dennis spent seven years working in radio communications before transitioning to education. Over the past 14 years, she has progressed to multiple positions of expanding responsibility in career services. These positions include work as Director of Career Services, Industry Outreach Liaison, Senior Career Services Advisor, Senior Career Coach, Regional Placement Coordinator, Program Manager, and Career Services Manager at various educational institutes and sectors where herself and the Career Services team spent valuable time developing rapport, partnerships and long-term career opportunities for students and graduates.

In 2022, Ms. Dennis received the Pinnacle Leadership Award due to her ability to hire and retain key talent and lead various Career Services departments to support students and alumni and exceed placement standards.

Her combined ability to successfully manage operations while also effectively interacting with community partners, students and staff is a passion for Ms. Dennis.

Hey y’all! I am excited to work as a Career Services Advisor with South University’s Online Programs! Before coming to South, I received a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Auburn University. War Eagle! Following undergrad, I worked as a College and Career Advisor at David Douglas High School in Portland, Oregon. After three years in beautiful Oregon, I decided to come back to Pennsylvania to fulfill a Master of Education Degree in Higher Education from Penn State. We Are… While attending PSU, I had the opportunity to work in Accessibility and Disability Studies with Penn State University Libraries and continued that employment after graduation.  I am grateful to be a part of the South family!   

Career Advice – Network! Network! Network! You never know who you are talking to and the lessons you can learn through relationships and conversations. Treat others with respect and listen; listen to their stories and advice. Storytelling and relationships not only expand creativity of what you are capable of professionally, but also allows you to grow personally.

Hello, My name is Austin Long, I am one of the Career Services Advisors here at South University.  I am from Pittsburgh, Pa, and began working at South University in 2020.  I received my Bachelor’s in Finance from La Roche University and my Master’s degree in Leadership from South University.  Higher education is a passion of mine as I’ve been working in the industry for more than 8 years, serving in various departments such as Student Life, Athletics, and Career Services.  In my spare time I am the assistant baseball coach at a local college in Pittsburgh.

Career Advice – Continue to sharpen the saw! You are the saw! Frequently set aside time to continue your personal and professional development. Receiving your diploma means you are prepared to enter your industry, however it is up to you to continue to develop your skillset in order to grow in your industry. So enroll in that continuing education course! Attend that industry networking event! Take that spin class! You are your greatest asset!!

Hey Everyone! My name is Misty Heitman, and I am one of the Career Services Advisors assisting online students and graduates. Previously, I worked in Career Services for Independence University, taking on the South University Career Services Advisor role in 2021. I live in Cookeville, Tennessee with my husband and family. Having earned my bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems and a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Tennessee Technological University, I have had the tremendous opportunity of teaching in many capacities all over the world.

Educating people and helping them to become who they were created to be, is one of my greatest passions. No matter in what stage of life you are, I want you to know that you have a purpose, especially in the career field you have selected to study. Hello! My name is Eylie Buehler Crudup. I joined the South University career services team in August 2020. I grew up in a small town in Ohio before attending Allegheny College and receiving my Bachelor’s degree in communications arts and journalism. After a year of working in Pittsburgh post-grad, I enrolled at Duquesne University and completed my Master’s degree in higher education administration with a focus in Title IX and civil rights.  I love working in higher ed. and interacting one-on-one with students. Career Advice: I’ve found I forget to add relevant content to my resume if it’s too far from the event or job completion. Keeping a “master resume,” a running list of past experiences or accolades, will help in the long-run. Adding events as they happen to this resume makes it much easier to put a portfolio together when the time comes to reapply. It never hurts to have a list of all your accomplishments when you need a morale boost too!

Hey guys! My name is Shanna (like banana) and I am so glad to be a part of the South family. I have a Bachelor of Arts in History from Thiel College, and a Master of Education.  My Master’s program took me five years as I could only take one class per term while I worked full time. I am extremely fortunate to have the support of my husband Josh, and children Lily and Dylan. I hope to give South students and alums that same support by providing guidance as they approach Graduation and enter the workforce, or change career paths. My background in Higher Education includes Admissions, Financial Aid, and College and Career Counseling.  I am so proud of our South University learners’ accomplishments and am excited to see them reach their full potential. Fun fact: I am a huge football fan! My Grandfather was a Coach and my Father recently retired from coaching college football. Go Steelers!

Career Advice – Clean up your social media! Look at your LinkedIn, and consider making your Instagram and Facebook private if they are not already. Employers can do a quick Google search of your name and find your social media accounts. If your information is public, be sure the image you are creating about you reflects a positive and professional brand. Avoid posting political and other debated or trending commentary. Instead, leverage your social media presence to connect with professionals in your field and build a professional image showcasing your program specific interests and expertise.

Hello! My name is Michelle Vent and I am a Career Service Advisor for the online campus at South University.  I previously was a Career Specialist at the Community College of Allegheny County and have worked at the University of Pittsburgh for over 10 years. I have by Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and my Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management from St. Francis University.

Career Advice – Begin the job search process well before graduation.  It can take several months to find the right opportunity.  Always develop new skills and update them on your resume and LinkedIn.  We are all a work in progress and continue to learn and evolve every day.  Network with people inside and outside of your specialty.  You never know when that connection could lead you to a new opportunity!
